Jim is Akron through and through. He grew up in Portage Lakes, graduated from Archbishop Hoban High School with the Class of 1970, and has spent his whole life in and around the city. He's also a proud member of the Lonestar fraternity which captivated the University of Akron throughout the 70s.
For more than 30 years he owned and ran Kenmore Floors — the flooring business his parents, Margaret and Jerry, started before him. Over those decades Jim installed just about every kind of floor there is: hardwood, tile, vinyl, and carpet, in homes and commercial spaces all over the area. All told, he's installed or estimated over 10,000 jobs in his lifetime.
These days Jim is retired from the floor business, but he never stopped being handy. Now he helps neighbors around Akron fix the things that need fixing — and makes a little coin doing work he still genuinely enjoys.
So… who's a “Handy Jim”?
A “Handy Jim” isn't really a name — it's a kind of person. The one who's just handy at everything. The one you call when something breaks, because you know they'll figure it out. Basically, a dad who can fix anything.
Ours happens to actually be named Jim — he's the dad who started all this. But here's the thing: not everyone who works under Handy Jims is named Jim, and they don't need to be. They just need to be handy like a dad — the kind of person you'd trust with your keys and your whole honey-do list.
